ARTENARA


Artenara is a town in central-western part of Gran Canaria, located in the mountains. Situated on an altitude of 1270 metres above sea level is also the highest placed village on the island.

ArtenaraIn that small canarian village and neighbouring areas we find numerous Casas Cuevas - the cave dwellings, in which ancient Aborigenes used to live. The great part of them are used also nowadays and still inhabited by current residents. The main advantage of caves is their ability to keep pleasant cool during hot summer, as well as provide warmth in the winter.


ArtenaraAmong others attractions of Artenara for the mansion surely deserve grooved in the rock small chapel Santuario de la Virgen de la Cuevita. Without a doubt you will be delighted with the landscapes seen from this altitude: the perfectly visible mountain rock formations Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga, covered with green valleys and ravines, and best preserved on the island forest areas of Tamadaba and Tirma. Especially for the amateurs of walking trips, had been prepared many exciting routes.

Artenara - Virgen de la Cuevita - enlarge photo Virgen de la Cuevita - a small cave church dedicated to patron of canarian folklore and cyclists. The entire chapel, including its interior elements, such as: altar, rostrurn, confessional and choir, are grooved in the same rock. This temple is very modest, quiet and incredibly atmospheric. Artenara - Iglesia de San Matías - enlarge photo Iglesia de San Matías - the parish church located at Plaza de San Matías, first erected in 17th century and reconstructed in the end of 19th. It has very pleasant interior and the beautiful stained glasses in the windows. Between the masses the temple resounds with quiet, calm music, what provides a perfect conditions to contemplate.

Artenara - Mirador de Unamuno - enlarge photo Mirador de Unamuno - the viewing area located close to Plaza de San Matías. On this balcony are the pleasant, flowery arbour and the statue of famous spanish poet and philosopher - Miguel the Unamuno, made by Manolo González to memory of his stay on Gran Canaria in 1910. However, the most worth seeing is this unbelievable panoramic view of surrounding mountains and ravines disappearing in the depths.



Artenara neighbourhood

Tamadaba - enlarge photo Pinar de Tamadaba - situated on an altitude of 1400 metres above sea level, the largest forest area on Gran Canaria, dominated by characteristic for the island species of pine - Pino Canario.

Caldera Pinos de Gáldar - the wide volcano crater located northeast of Artenara. Along with neighbouring Montañon Negro it was formed during last volcanic eruption on the island. Its steep slopes are covered with fine pebbles of lava (picón) and ashes. From this place extends beautiful view of entire northern coast of Gran Canaria. You may also take a pleasant walk accross the pine forest and try to find a huge cone from canarian pine.

Roque Bentayga - a basalt rocky monolith (1412 metres above sea level) located southwest from Tejeda, in the exact center of the island. It was a very important place for ancient canarians, a sanctuary and a place used for worship. Here the offerings to assure rain and fertility rituals were made.

Acusa - Ermita de la Candelaria - enlarge photo Acusa - a small settlement situated northwest of Artenara, where we find many archeological reminds, such as preserved till now, still inhabited cave houses. Without a doubt it's worth to see the chapel Ermita de la Candelaria, first located in a cave. In its interior precious paintings were gathered.

Cruz de Tejeda - a small village in the central part of Gran Canaria, which is actually a crossing of roads going to the island in all directions. On small marketplace are placed only the church, little hotel and restaurant. The children will be delighted with the possibility of ride on a donkey.

Tejeda - a picturesque, canarian village situated in same center of the island, extended on the slopes surrounded by the high mountains. The low, white plastered houses are placed around the church erected on the main square of the town. Below, there is the beautiful, green valley, and above it towers the huge Roque Bentayga.  Find hotel in Tejeda
