AGÜIMES


Agüimes - a city located in the eastern part of the island, in the range of hills, on an altitude of about 500 metres above sea level.

Agüimes - Iglesia de San SebastianThis is one of the oldest (1486), once the most important town on Gran Canaria, formerly the town of the kings. From that times preserved many monumental buildings, memorials and artefacts, which renovated nowadays are the components of, for example, todays Old Town, or a part of expositions in Centro Interpretación del Casco Histórico and Museo de Historia.


AgüimesAlong the road leading from Agüimes toward the coast are placed many sculptures that have to reflect the character, commemorate the place and beauty of all district. These sculptures make the so-called Sculpture Promenade. In same Agüimes are the several of it, mainly in the Casco Histórico.

Places of interest

Agüimes - Casco Histórico - enlarge photo Casco Histórico - the Agüimes Old Town, one of the oldest (1946) and best preserved on all the archipelago. Walking through the alleys we meet the traces of the past: facades, flat roofs, traditional elements of architecture and sculptures placed in various parts of the Old Town, e.g. the Cellist at Iglesia de San Sebastian.

Agüimes - Iglesia de San Sebastian - enlarge photo Iglesia de San Sebastian - a church situated at Plaza Nuestra Señora del Rosario, which combines the elements of Baroque, Gothic and Neoclassicism; in 1981 classified as National Monument of Art History.

Centro Interpretación del Casco Histórico - Agüimes Exhibition Center located in central part of Casco Histórico, at Plaza de San Antón. An excursion through following rooms of the Center brings the history of the Old Town, presents the local art and the archeological artefacts.

Agüimes - Museo de Historia - enlarge photo Museo de Historia - a museum founded in the interior of old building where was the seat of canarian bishops, known also as Bishops Palace (Palacio Episcopal). An exhibition contains eight rooms and presents the last five centuries of Agüimes history.



Agüimes neighbourhood

Barranco de Guayadeque - enlarge photo Barranco de Guayadeque - a ravine extends between Agüimes and Ingenio, one of the most narrow and the deepest on Gran Canaria. The altitudes at some places reaches even 1500 metres above sea level. Previously it was inhabited by Guanches - the original residents of the island, today it's the perfect place for barbecue. The great attraction is cored in a rock chapel of St. Bartholomew the Apostle.

Temisas - a small village situated near the Agüimes, on an altitude of 650 metres above sea level. Its buildings are the excellent example of traditional canarian architecture. From this place we can admire the beautiful mountain landscapes. We can also see the Chapel of St. Michael from 1730 and the magnificent olive grove.

Cruce de Arinaga - a small town located between Agüimes and Playa de Arinaga. In various places at the main road are placed characteristic for this region sculptures.

Playa de Arinaga - enlarge photo Playa de Arinaga - a town situated on the west coast, a former fishing village. Rather calm and quiet, but the narrow streets, low buildings and coastal promenade with the sculptures of fishes makes this place incredibly charming. Additonal attractions are the Museum of Calcium and the lighthouse. It's also worth to climb the nearest hill Arinaga (199 metres above sea level) and enjoy the fascinating view of beautiful surrounding.

Pozo Izquierdo - enlarge photo Pozo Izquierdo - because of continuously blowing winds the Pozo Izquierdo was the place where arose the largest on the island complex of wind power stations. Here the Windsurfing School is located and the International Championships in windsurfing taking place. You also find here the, so-called, Salinas de Tenefé - pools to desalting sea water.

Vecindario - along this town leads the longest trade street on the island - Avenida de Canarias; inhabited by people of different origins is an excellent example of multicultural society. Every Wednesday at the square at Ateneo the market takes place.  Find hotel in Vecindario
